Creativity and Genre

           When embarking on a new endeavor, creativity is an essential ingredient in the recipe of success. This is because with more creativity, there is more innovation, which is the most appealing things for consumers. After extensive research on films, magazines, and speeches, I have come to the conclusion that without any creativity, it is very hard to compete in this day and age. As seen from the article, An Interview with Ron Beghetto: Subtle Nuances of Creativity, the most productive parts of a project of any kind are attributed to creativity. It states, “There are potential costs to oneself and others. So, it is important that people still take the time to consider whether the potential benefits outweigh the potential costs. This includes taking time to "read the context" and determine whether a different approach is appropriate for the situation at hand.” Adults lose this ability over time because educational institutions teach students to look for one answer. Therefore, children are usually better at looking for obscure and out-of-the-box solutions to a problem. Also stated in the TED talk, “creativity is one of the core human elements to compete in a world that is becoming automated faster than we think.” In many cases, creative thinking is what separates people in the work environment. 

Beginning with the “New Introductions” activity, I realized many kinds of films could be related to my life. Movies such as Star Wars, Monsters Inc, and The Lion King all had a special place in my heart because of the memories I had of watching those movies with my family. Notes were then taken on movie genres, movie tropes, and magazines. The movie genres and tropes sincerely helped with the process of choosing how to do our movie. Many of the tropes in dramas include problems with the dialogue being too predictable. The notes on movie tropes showed us that we could avoid a lot of these tropes simply by choosing a documentary. By eliminating the use of a “story driven film,” we could avoid predictability tropes that are often found in these movies. The movie genre notes helped us narrow down what would be a good topic to look at. 

 To recap, I am working with one other partner on the film portfolio project. We had initially planned to do a magazine, but after timely consideration, we realized it wouldn’t fit very well. We are planning to do an opening to a documentary that looks at the grim side of the covid-19 pandemic. Regardless of how the personal view may be on it, there has still been a huge impact on the world. We thought to choose a documentary because that is not very overplayed. Also, by taking a scarier approach, we figured that would be a very unique set of attributes that would be the most appealing.
